Spreading the mind of loving-kindness is initiating and delivering love to those we think of. The ones we spread our mind of loving-kindness over, regardless of whether they are near or far away from us, will receive breezy and cool energy. Their minds will be put at ease, and their bodhi mind will be more stabilized. Those who have been calculating to do wrong things will stop; they will regret their wrong actions and not want to continue to commit them anymore. Those who are suffering will be more relaxed.
The people who spread their mind of loving-kindness are the happiest ones because the energy of love is all over their bodies and overwhelm their minds. Our mind of loving-kindness is given without a run-out, but it becomes more plentiful and more powerful day by day. No matter where we move to, we will always carry out the deed of love. Initially, our mind of loving-kindness is fragile, but because we practice constantly, our mind of loving-kindness will grow higher and greater without a possible comparison.
When we spread our mind of loving-kindness over beings in the east, the southeast, the south, the southwest, the west, the northwest, the north, the northeast, the up, the down, and the middle will live long, peacefully, and happily without sufferings, illnesses, and feuds, and their achievements will always be fulfilled.
When we spread our mind of loving-kindness over beings who are emotional species, who are weak, who are strong, who are big, who are small, who are long, who are large, who are medium, who are short, who are visible, who are invisible, who are near, who are far, who were born, who are going to be born, who are in four directions and eight ways, who are included in three precepts, who are consisted in four species, and who are in all realms, they will live long, peacefully, and happily without sufferings, illnesses, and feuds and their achievement will always be fulfilled.
When we spread our mind of loving-kindness over those who love us, who do not love us, who nurture us, who hate us, who help us, who harm us, who praise us, and who criticize us, they will live long, peacefully, and happily without sufferings, illnesses, and feuds and their achievements will always be fulfilled.
Spreading our mind of loving-kindness, we wish that there will be no one deceiving, scorning, and insulting other ones at anywhere and anytime and there will be no feud, criticism, pains, and disappointment to one another. We spread our mind of loving-kindness equally over all beings in all the worlds without discrimination, limitation, refusal, laziness, discouragement, restraint, imposition, feud, and selfishness. We spread our mind of loving-kindness over all beings in ten directions when we walk, stand, sit, and lie and when we are healthy, sick, and weak regardless of whether it is day or night and who they are. That is the practice of spreading the mind of loving-kindness nobly.
The most important practice is spreading our mind of loving-kindness over those who harm us or those we always talk about as our enemies. The practitioner still having enemy is the failure. Once we are determined to practice, there is no enemy to us at all. It is common if we love those who love us, but if we love ones who do not love us or even bless them and wish them to change themselves and expect them to live in happiness, that love is much greater.
The mind of loving-kindness is a source of energy raising us in sufferings. It makes us not sink into and be stuck with them. Then, it brings interests to us and other people. Those who harm us have many pains. They are never loved and sympathized, thus they have lots of wrong perceptions, have to strive much to make a living, and are overwhelmed in misfortune. Therefore, it is right for us to love them. Why must we be angry with and hate them?
Practicing the mind of loving-kindness means loving all beings regardless of the species they are. One is bitten by a snake because the energy of his mind of loving-kindness pervades weakly or nothing. The snake assumes he would be ready to attack it, thus it defends and fights back. Spreading our mind of loving-kindness over all species, we will be forgiven and spared by them. Moreover, a cancer causes us to be withered, but if we spread our mind of loving-kindness over the illness, our pains will be partially eased. Practicing meditation for spreading the mind of loving-kindness is like that.
The question is how to reinforce our mind of loving-kindness. Our mind of loving-kindness has to be abundant to be spread. If scarce mind of loving-kindness is spread, the effect will not be really high. Maudgalyayana saved his mother from suffering from the hell because of the mind of loving-kindness of all the monks in the Buddha’s Sangha. Therefore, if we want to be successful in spreading our mind of loving-kindness, we have to reinforce our loves.
If we spread our mind of loving-kindness with hatred, anger, envy, and discrimination, the effect will be limited less or more. To get the mind of loving-kindness stronger, we must spread it over us first, then over those we love or are close to such as our relatives, our friends, our colleagues, and those who are far away from us afterwards. Why is it so? It is simply because the mind of loving-kindness springs up in our intimates faster, thus when we approach their energy, we will have plentiful peace and happiness. Then, the mind of loving-kindness immediately becomes stronger. At that time, we will be strong and brave enough to forgive and spread our mind of loving-kindness over ones we hate.
We hate someone at the first time meeting because we have had a karmic debt with them in a past life. Therefore, the problem does not lie in their hateful faces or attitudes, but it is because we do not have enough ability to accept them. Changing our attitudes, we will be able to accept them, and when we accept them, we start to spread our mind of loving-kindness furiously over them to be able to love them, the ones we have hated before.
We normally think our sufferings are caused by other people, but we do not accept that we are one of the elements contributing to our miseries. Instead of blaming other ones, we should look at ourselves to think whether our mind of loving-kindness are enough to bring happiness to people or it is so weak that it is withering away and whether our mind of unkindness itself causes other people’s pains, and worse, hurt ourselves. With a great love, we would rather suffer than let other people suffer. We will accept every pain to see other ones happy, but if we know how to ease our pains, we can stay calm and smile pleasantly.
