Five minutes at midday resets the accumulation before it becomes harder to shift. Either timing is more effective than waiting until the evening to undo a full day of tension.
Pay particular attention to the jaw release. Most people carry significantly more tension in the jaw than they realize, and the jaw has a direct relationship to the vagus nerve through the facial nerve complex. Softening the jaw is one of the fastest access points to parasympathetic activation available in the body — faster, often, than breath alone.
When the practice asks you to notice the surface supporting your body, take it literally. Press down slightly into whatever you’re sitting or lying on. Feel the resistance — the actual physical fact of being held. This is not a visualization. The nervous system responds to genuine proprioceptive input, not imagined support. In a single session, most people notice a reduction in physical tension and a slight slowing of mental activity. The shift may be subtle — a loosening in the shoulders, a breath that goes slightly deeper than the one before, a few seconds of genuine quiet between thoughts. That is the practice working.
Over days and weeks of consistent practice, the baseline shifts. The nervous system learns — through repeated experience — that this state is available and that returning to it is reliable. The gap between a stressful stimulus and a stress response begins to widen. Reactions that previously felt automatic begin to feel like choices. This is neuroplasticity: the brain’s actual structure changing in response to repeated experience, building the neural pathways associated with stability and equanimity.
